Defender (subtitled For All Mankind outside of North America) is a shoot em' up game developed by both 7 Studios and Inevitable Entertainment for the Xbox and PlayStation 2. Outlook Entertainment developed the Nintendo GameCube port. The game was developed in October 2002 with the GameCube version releasing a month after of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions. The Game Boy Advance version was a completely different game.

The game was also released on Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade.

Plot

The player picks up humans who are in danger from the Aliens who then must be dropped off at the drop zone for extraction. The enemy " landers " are attacking the humans and will constantly try to pick them up for themselves to take for unknown purposes. If a human is stolen  he player has a short amount of time to blast the lander out of the sky and catch the slowly falling human to save it from being absorbed. If the player fails save that human they get absorbed into the lander and the lander then gets transformed into a very difficult enemy Of course if a human hits the ground from falling they die from fall damage. The enemies come in a variety of ships including a few ground units that can turn those humans into zombies.

Reception

IGN said that the game was "pretty short, but it's also a fast, mostly mindless shooter". GameSpot stated that "if you like mission-based space combat simulations such as Wing Commander, and you don't mind the game's defensive focus, Defender does a mostly good job of walking the line between having modern gameplay depth and remaining somewhat faithful to the source material"
