Quick Resume is a feature on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles that puts games into a suspended state that can be resumed at any point, allowing the user to pick up right where they left off without needing to load the game up again.[1] The feature was first detailed in a February 2020 Xbox Wire post outlining several features of the then upcoming Xbox Series X.[1] A tech demo showcasing the feature was uploaded to the Xbox YouTube channel the following month.[2][3]

The feature supports up to three Xbox Series X|S games and over three original Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One games at a time.[4] When the Quick Resume game limit is exceeded, the oldest suspended title is closed to make room for the new one. Up to two games can be pinned in Quick Resume which will always remain suspended unless removed by the user, regardless of how many other games are opened.

In April 2026, the ability to disable Quick Resume for specific games was made available.[5]

Features

Quick Resume supports at least three Xbox Series X|S games at once as well as at least three Xbox One, original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles through backwards compatibility.[6] Once the maximum number of games have been put into Quick Resume, the oldest title will be automatically closed when a new game is opened. Users can pin up to two games at a time in Quick Resume that will stay in the group no matter how many other titles are opened.

Titles in Quick Resume can be accessed through the Guide, the Groups tab in My Games & Apps, and by scrolling down on the Dashboard.

Quick Resume can hold multiple games' suspended sates even after the system is rebooted, updated, or unplugged.[7]

Titles can be removed from Quick Resume at any time by closing the game or navigating to the Quick Resume group on the Dashboard or in My Games & Apps, pressing Menu Button, and selecting "Remove from Quick Resume". Unless Quick Resume has been disabled for the game, it will be added back to Quick Resume next time it is opened.

Disabling Quick Resume

Despite being a feature since the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in 2020, the ability to disable Quick Resume was not made available until 2026.[5] As a highly requested feature, it was first acknowledged by former CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer in 2022, stating that the feature would be “put on the list of things to look at.”[8]

In March 2026, the feature was finally made available to select Xbox Insiders, before being released to all users the following month.[9] Work began on the update that also included "some of the most requested Xbox features" shortly after Spencer was succeeded by current CEO of Xbox Asha Sharma.[10]

How to disable entirely

It is currently not possible to disable Quick Resume across the entire console, however, the feature can be turned off for individual games.[11]

How to disable for specific games

  1. Open My Games & Apps
  2. Find the game you would like to disable Quick Resume for and press Menu Button
  3. Select "Manage game and add-ons"
  4. Select "Quick Resume settings"
  5. Select "Disable Quick Resume"

If the box is ticked on this screen, it means Quick Resume has been disabled for the game. To enable Quick Resume again, simply untick the box.

Unsupported titles

The Xbox Support article for Quick Resume states that the feature is available for "most of our most-played titles" and "some games that are played less frequently won’t be supported, but we’re working all the time to add Quick Resume support for more games."

While there is no official list of unsupported titles, the following aims to compile all titles that have been found to not support Quick Resume,
